Every Rosa Has Its Thorn #afltrades

West Coast value in = 870 points – Pick 31.

Gold Coast value in = 318 points – Matt Rosa.

VerdictUnfair trade (West Coast gains 552 points of pick and player value, or 2.74 points back for every point given up).

Gold Coast, after having acquired a number of second round picks, has decided to cash one of those chips in on disgruntled West Coast midfielder Matt Rosa. With five gaps remaining on their list for 2016, their decision to take a chance on another mature player makes sense, certainly given the youth on their list.

At this stage, pick 61 is the last live pick for the Suns, pending a rookie upgrade if one exists. If one is made (likely Adam Saad), that will go to pick 35, which is barely different to pick 31 in value. Essentially, this trade used pick 65 from a GC perspective, which is a more accurate representation of Rosa’s current value.

With West Coast having a solid 2015, and recruiting a ready-made midfielder in Jack Redden, Rosa’s place in the Eagles future plans was a little uncertain. Also of concern was Rosa’s decline in form in 2015 from his performance in 2014, with his output across a number of key categories dropping.

Although HPN’s formula sees this trade as a massive West Coast win, in reality it feels more like a win-win for both sides given the bigger picture.
