Player Approximate Value, or PAV for short, is the AFL player value system that Cody and Sean developed in 2017 with the assistance of a few colleagues. It distributes value on both team performance and the individual player’s involvement in the games that they played. It is pace-adjusted, and comparable across years.
We introduced PAV like in this piece in mid-2017. The formulas for PAV are contained there.
This is a great piece that Nick Rynne wrote about it for the West Australian. Thanks Nick!
Currently you can view PAVs by years – we will be adding more methods in the not-too-distant future.
