A familiar story here. James Stewart is a recent relatively high draft pick (pick 27) and compared to a valuation based on that draft pick, he’s being traded for very little.
Stewart probably immediately becomes Essendon’s second best key position forward where, despite playing a few games for the giants he really has no chance of breaking in at the Giants now that Patton has started fulfilling his potential. Stewart is a handy player, and should immediately relieve the pressure on Joe Daniher. The UWS Giants might struggle a bit more next year, but they should fill the hole left.
For GWS the pick currently doesn’t even carry any academy points (it may move up to be worth a handful as it moves up with bidding to maybe pick 69 or so).
Verdict: GWS are playing a different game to everyone else, but the Dons got a potentially handy player for nearly nothing.
